The National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA) has launched a comprehensive examination information system (EMIS) that will enable candidates to register online.

Speaking at the launching ceremony on Friday, Necta executive secretary Dr Joyce Ndalichako said the system would be used by Form Four and Six candidates to start with.

``Online registration will be for private and public school candidates,`` Dr. Ndalichako said.

She said web-based applications had been designed to promote efficiency in the running of examinations, particularly during the registration process, something which previously faced many challenges.

The Necta boss said the new system, launched by Education and Vocational Training minister Prof Jumanne Maghembe, would solve or substantially reduce the problem of errors on registration forms.

``Now we don`t have to worry because the computer will make some corrections automatically, and even when the candidate does not qualify, the system will give an alert,`` she clarified.

``Our online system guarantees the candidates of immediate response through an e-mail auto-reply service, and will also receive messages through their mobile phones,`` said Dr Ndalichako.

Speaking shortly after official opening the online registration system, Prof Maghembe congratulated Necta on a positive step, saying development of the system coincided with the government`s mission to expand the use of information and communication technology in the country.

Prof Maghembe urged regional and district education officers together with head teachers of public secondary schools to start applying the system right away as part and parcel of the registration process, not as an option.

``The only challenge ahead is making sure that you all get facilities in your schools to enable the use of the system. The government will do its best to ensure that it works,`` he said.
