A cargo handling company at Dar es Salaam`s Julius Nyerere International Airport, Swissport Tanzania, has predicted a dramatic growth of the aviation industry in the country if the `Destination Tanzania` promotion is extended worldwide.

The company`s board chairman, Urs Sieber, said at a news briefing on Tuesday that the development of the sector depended on the country`s popularity and improvement of its infrastructure.

The Swissport chairman was briefing the press on the company`s progress following a meeting of the board earlier in the day.

At the briefing, the company`s chief executive officer, Gaudence Temu, said the company achieved myriad successes over the past year and hoped for a bright future.

According to him, Swissport had recommended a final dividend of 1,602m/-, equivalent to 44.48/- per share.

Temu said an interim dividend of 1,260m/- was approved and paid in November, last year.

The CEO said the company had recorded a strong financial performance with a profit before tax of 5,166m/-, which was an increase of 2 per cent. He added that net profit for last year amounted to 3,577m/-, compared to previous year`s 3,495m/-.

Temu said that Swissport had experienced a number of challenges in the year 2007, including growing impacts on operational costs due to high fuel prices, but said the company had managed to improve the welfare of its employees.

According to him, the company earned 25,200m/- as at end of December, 2007 despite the challenges.

Swissport`s exclusive concession for offering cargo handling services at JNIA was last year extended to December 31, this year, while that at Kilimanjaro International Airport was extended to August 31, this year, according to board chair Sieber.
