By Amri Lugungulo, PST, Kisarawe

About 4000 people including secondary school students in Kisarawe District, Coast Region, will soon enjoy clean and safe water after completion of construction and rehabilitation of deep wells in various areas in the district.

Acting district water engineer Majid Mtili told PST recently that the project would cost 107m/-, a loan from the African Development Bank (ADB).

Mtili said the project would benefit 3964 residents in Ngongele, Mitengwe, Kitanga and Songwe villages, and pupils of Mzenga, Masaki and Kibuta secondary schools, adding that deep wells would be drilled at Masaki, Kibuta and Mzenga secondary schools and in Kitanga an Mitengwe villages while wells at Ngongele and Sangwe would be rehabilitated.

He said drilling of new wells and rehabilitation of old ones would start soon and the work was expected to be completed by this June.

The acting district water engineer said further that the district was marking Maji Week by clearing all water sources, and at the climax of the celebrations on March 22, the district would launch the Kisarawe Water Authority.

Mtili said the residents of Kisarawe township were currently grappling with water blues following a prolonged dry spell which led to the drying up of its main water sources at Minaki and Dalu dams.
