The National Development Corporation (NDC) has signed a contract with a British firm, DLA Piper, for the provision of advisory services for the procurement of investors in the Mchuchuma coal and Liganga iron ore projects.

An NDC statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday said the contract was signed on Tuesday by NDC Managing Director Gideon Nasari and the firm`s representative, Charles Morrison.

The procurement of DLA Piper services for the two projects in the Mtwara Development Corridor was made possible through a USD 600,000 grant from the NEPAD Africa Partnership Unit of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and the Regional Spatial Development Initiative (RSDI) of South Africa.

Under the contract, DLA Piper will provide advisory services to the government through NDC.

The company will help in obtaining investors for the Mchuchuma coal mining and power and Liganga iron ore projects.

DLA Piper will also advise the government on appropriate integration of productive and infrastructure projects within the Mtwara Development Corridor and on institutional framework for their implementation under a public-private partnership (PPP) structure.

However, the advisor will assist the government to structure a most beneficial deal for Tanzania to maximise benefits from the exploitation of Mchuchuma coal and Liganga iron ore resources.

According to the press statement, the consultant will have to consult key stakeholders and be guided by an inter-ministerial high level technical committee established by the government.

The contract has been signed to ensure that all important aspects and inputs of various key sectors of the population are taken on board to produce the desired investment strategy.

The Mchuchuma and Liganga projects are in Ludewa District, Iringa Region.

The Mchuchuma project involves mining of coal reserves and establishment of a 400MW power plant.

The Liganga iron ore project is for producing steel. Its iron also has vanadium and titanium metals used in alloys which are of higher value than steel.
