Tanzania, India sign pact to strengthen cooperation in ICT

Tanzania and India have agreed to establish a centre in Dar es Salaam in their quest to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the area of information technology.
A memorandum of understanding to that effect was signed between the two countries yesterday in the Indian capital, New Dehli, by Industries, Trade and Marketing minister Dr. Mary Nagu and Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary Nalin Surie.
The signing ceremony for establishing an India-Tanzania Centre for Excellence in ICT was also witnessed by Vice-President Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein and his Indian counterpart, Hamid Ansari.
Under the MoU, India will provide a cooperation package that would involve technical experts, supply of hardware, software and networking equipment, training of Tanzanian specialists in India and dispatching of Indian experts for setting up the centre and providing on-the-job training.
On the other hand, Tanzania will provide a building with necessary space, computers and office furniture, fully furnished residential accommodation, transport, communications and medical facilities for experts from India.
Tanzania will also be required to exempt equipment and services under the cooperation programme from customs duties, internal taxes and other fiscal levies which may be imposed in Tanzania.
The government shall also recruit Tanzanian personnel to manage the centre and provide financial assistance to cater for day-to-day operational expenses for the centre.
In order to monitor proper implementation of the project, a joint project monitoring committee will be set up consisting of members from India and Tanzania to facilitate implementation of the project and review monthly progress of the work done.
