The First Lady, Mama Salma Kikwete, has called on organisations working towards empowering women and girls to cooperate in order to hasten changes.
Speaking to board members of the Tanzania Media Women`s Association (TAMWA) who paid a courtesy call on her recently, Mama Kikwete said since all the organisations were geared towards improving women`s and girl`s social and economic status, it was high time they worked together and cooperated in a bid to reach their goal.
``Since all of us are targeting to liberate the same woman, we must work together to achieve this goal and hasten changes that will bring about quick development,`` she said.
Mama Kikwete, who is also the chairperson of Wanawake na Maendeleo Foundation (WAMA), said her organisation was ready to receive advice and cooperate with other organisations working towards improving women`s and girls` welfare in the country.
She said WAMA focused on three areas, namely promotion of girls` education, advocacy and promotion of health for women and girls and women empowerment, all of which were geared to improving their welfare.
On health promotion, Mama Kikwete said WAMA worked to promote the well-being of Tanzanians and creating conditions for sustainable development through reduction of infant and material mortality, prevention of HIV/Aids infection, and provision of care and support to those affected by the killer disease.
Speaking on education, the First Lady said already WAMA was supporting a number of students at different levels, from primary to university, though she said the demand was higher than available resources.
She said WAMA had supported more than 150 orphan girls and vulnerable children to enroll in secondary schools.
According to the First Lady, WAMA was currently in the process of constructing a secondary school in Rufiji, Coast Region.
