Kisarawe parents introduce self-help fund on education

By Amri Lugungulo, PST, Kisarawe

Kisarawe District Commissioner Khalifa Karamagi has commended the move by a group of parents in the district to establish an education fund aimed at helping each other in meeting the cost of educating their children at all levels of education.

Karamagi praised the parents at the inauguration of the fund held this week in Kisarawe township.

A total of 200,000/- has already been raised by the parents, most of whom sent their children to secondary schools last year.

Highly praising them for the move, the DC said the parents had set a good precedent in the district as most people in the area hardly harboured such a noble idea.

``I congratulate you and request that you carry on with the spirit, which is an exemplary challenge to your colleagues in the district. Such a move highly dwarfs in importance subscriptions for weddings and local dances, something which has been a common phenomenon in this area,`` she said, adding that the old habit had immensely set back social and economic development in the area.

She stressed that though the step taken by the parents had come a bit late compared to other areas in the country, its positive results would soon be obvious for everyone in the district to see and appreciate.

During the function, the district chief, who was also the guest of honour, also conducted an impromptu fund-raiser which collected 54,500/- for the fund.

In their message, the parents said the door was open for other parents to join the fund in order to help each other in educating their children.

They stressed that the group did not aim to seclude itself from other parents, but it simply wanted to supplement government efforts in ensuring the district and the region in general had ample access to educational opportunities.
