Tanzania secures more scholarships from Indian Govt

The government of India has increased the number of scholarships to Tanzanians. Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said the increase was made in response to a request by Vice-President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein who is on an official tour of India.
Singh said Dr Shein requested the Indian government to increase the number of scholarships so as to enable more Tanzanians acquire expertise for the country`s development.
Dr Shein also requested the government of India to offer scholarships which would be used to train water engineers as the country currently experiences shortage of water expertise.
Dr Singh said emphasis in education was vital in the world of science and technology because it was the basis for development.
According to Tanzanian High Commissioner to India John Kijazi the government of India has offered about 50 scholarships through its programme of Indian Technical and Economical Cooperation and Indian Cooperation and Cultural Relations, but the posts were not enough to cater for the country`s needs.
Dr Shein appreciated Indian government assistance to Tanzania, which he said has brought development to the people.
Explaining about the political situation in neighbouring countries Dr Shein said President Kikwete, who is currently the Chairman for AU, was intent to see that all political squabbles in Africa were fizzled out.
``When there is no peace in your neighbour its impact goes to other countries as well thus it is good to make sure that our neighbours live in peace too,`` he said.
He however said Tanzania was looking forward to the Permanent Relations Commission meeting scheduled for New Delhi, which would discuss global economic cooperation and development.
In his tour Dr Shein also met Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari with whom he discussed cooperation issues and insisted on the importance of the sub continent`s govt assisting Tanzania in various spheres of development.
