Amref signs pact with Global Fund for grant worth $11.4m

The Africa Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) has signed a memorandum of understanding with its Global Fund partners which will result in the disbursement of more than USD11.4m.
Speaking at the MoU signing on Friday, AMREF Global Fund Programme manager Dr Amos Nyirenda said as a prerequisite, organisations receiving global fund grants had to sign a memorandum of understanding with the lead recipient before funds were disbursed.
He said the Global Fund round three project would entail scaling up access to quality voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) as an entry point to comprehensive care and support services for tuberculosis and HIV/Aids in Tanzania mainland through a coordinated multi-sectoral partnership.
He said the expected outputs of round three, phase two project was to increase the number of sexually active people using VCT services in 45 targeted districts.
Nyirenda said the project would also increase the number of people living with TB and HIV/Aids with access to comprehensive care and support services in all VCT sites and health facilities, and also improve comprehensive care-plus package in all regional centres in the targeted districts.
Tanzania was a major beneficiary of the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB and that during the period 2002 to 2008 it secured 10 grants worth USD 555,530,865, he said.
``So far Tanzania has received a total of USD 217,966,934 from the Global Fund and all the money is used to implement various activities, and the grants have increasingly complex components and activities and involve the participation of many partners,`` he noted.
He said that AMREF, being the lead sub-recipient, would oversee the partners in the implementation of the Global Fund round three phase two project.
Organisations which are implementing the project under the umbrella of AMREF include Action Aid International Tanzania, Care International Tanzania, Community Health Care in Van Association, Doctors with Africa, Family Planning Association of Tanzania, Medicins Du Monde France, Medicos Del Mundo Espana and Mwananchi Trust.
Others are Pharmaccess, Service Health and Development for people living with HIV/Aids, Shree Hindu Mandal Hospital, Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre, Tanzania Network of Women living with HIV/Aids, Tanzania Occupational Health Services, Tanzania Women and Welfare Centre, University Computing Center and World Vision Tanzania.
