DP tells CCM to come clean on Richmond, BoT scams

By Correspondent Gadiosa Lanmtey

The opposition Democratic Party (DP) yesterday asked Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to openly disclose all corrupt elements in the Richmond and Bank of Tanzania (BOT) scandals if it wanted to clear itself before the people.

The remarks by outspoken DP leader Rev Christopher Mtikila came as the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) was in Butiama for a two-day meeting to chart out the party`s strategies in the face of public criticisms triggered by corruption and embezzlement charges in the government circles.

Mtikila, who was addressing a news conference in Dar es Salaam, wanted CCM national chairman President Jakaya Kikwete to mention CCM members implicated in the scandals, thus plunging the country into problems.

He also pressed the party`s leadership to declared that all electricity contracts which Tanesco entered into with various private firms as illegal, suggesting that the funds should be returned to state coffers.

He said the NEC meeting at Butiama should be made a strategic tool in exposing corrupt leaders siphoning national resources at the expense of the majority of poor Tanzanians, most of whom still live on less than one US dollar a day.

``Most Tanzanians are expecting something different from the meeting. CCM members and leaders should come out with affirmative decisions and resolutions,`` he insisted.

The opposition party leader also urged party members to utilise the opportunity to initiate meaningful discussions on the formation of a Tanganyika government as stipulated in a declaration endorsed by Parliament in 1994.
