The Open University of Tanzania (OUT) has vowed to modernise and tailor its courses to the needs of the society without compromising their quality and affordability to students as it prepares to join other universities in forming a union of African universities.
OUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Tolly Mbwette revealed this in Iringa municipality recently when welcoming Education and Vocational Training Minister Professor Jumanne Maghembe to open the university`s centres in Iringa and Ruvuma regions.
``Our university is now in every district of the country availing quality and affordable distance-learning education within and outside Tanzania,`` Professor Mbwette told the minister.
He said OUT was bracing itself to provide quality and affordable education, be it at certificate, diploma or degree level, in line with existing market demands.
Professor Mbwette said this was partly made possible through ongoing infrastructural development, improvement and expansion to accommodate more students within and outside the country and through cooperation with other universities.
Citing a case in point, the vice-chancellor said next July OUT would be joining other universities in Africa to establish a union of African universities at an event scheduled to take place in Nigeria.
Minister Maghembe paid tribute to the university`s achievements in its 20-year-long existence since it was established in 1992 to a point where it was now enrolling almost 40,000 students.
He urged people in the country to make use of opportunities availed through OUT by acquiring quality and affordable education at one`s convenience.
