Laili Zamane, the person appointed as interim President of Comoros’ Anjouan Island in the place of fugitive rebel Colonel Mohamed Bacar, is expected to be sworn in today.
Bacar was toppled by African Union-backed troops last week, later fleeing to the nearby French-ruled Mayotte Island and now in custody in Reunion pending possible extradition to Anjouan.
A Comoros union government statement yesterday said Zamane, who was named by President Ahmed Sambi of the Comoros last week, will lead Anjouan until May, when local elections would be held.
Until his appointment, the Master of Laws holder was President of the Court of Appeal of Mutsamudu in the Anjouan capital.
The statement said President Sambi, who is attending an Arab League summit in the Syrian capital Damascus, would not attend Zamane`s installation ceremony.
AU-backed Comoros forces executed a brief incursion on Anjouan to topple self-declared leader Bacar.
The AU troops that invaded Anjouan Island, which together with Grand Comore and Moheli form the Comoros archipelago, were from Sudan and Tanzania. Libya, France and the US provided them with logistical support.
