Foundationgriven over USD1.5m by Norway

The Government of Norway through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs has agreed to provide Norwegian Kronor 8,200,000 (equivalent USD1,578,747.49 to support the Foundation for Civil Society in strengthening of the civil society sector.

The assistance commitment is in a contract signed recently by the government of Norway and FCS to cover a three-year period starting from this year.

The Norwegian Ambassador to Tanzania, Jon Lomoy, and Executive Director of the Foundation for Civil Society, John Ulanga, signed the contract on behalf of the two parties in a ceremony held in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

The agreed amount of support will be disbursed in instalments upon subsequent requests to be submitted by the FCS. The first disbursement amounting to NOK 1,500,000 will be paid immediately after signing of the contract.

Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, ambassador Lomoy said that Norway is one of key supporters of the FCS since 2004 whereby until 2007 it had already provided it with financial support amounting to USD945,951.
For his part, Ulanga said that the FCS builds capacity of Civil Society .

Organisations in the country with the focus of enabling them to contribute to making the citizens actively engage in the democratic process, and make them be aware, demand and get their rights.

``Since 2003 when the Foundation was established to December 2007, it has already approved grants worth about 20bn/-,`` he said.
