By Amri Lugungulo, PST, Kisarawe

Kisarawe District residents in Coast Region have been advised to invest in education, health, commerce, communications and public services projects to foster development in their midst.

The District Commissioner, Hanifa Karamagi, recently told the elite in Kisarawe township that they had a crucial responsibility to free their 102-year old district from poverty.

She told the audience comprising of professors and other professionals that the annual average income for Kisarawe per head was 280,000/-, while its level of education was the lowest in the country.

``Most of people in the district live in poor houses that lack necessary facilities like latrines. They do not have access to nutritious food and infant mortality is very high,`` she said.

Kisarawe became a district since the Germany colonial days.
Karamagi said that although there were ample opportunities for development in the area Kisarawe residents did not make use of available resources for combating illiteracy, poverty and diseases.

``We have to join hands in bringing prosperity to this district. In this regard, we have to feel ashamed when people in other districts laugh at us for our failure to work together in bringing about social and economic well being to this part of our country,`` she said.

She said poor infrastructure in the district has contributed in keeping away local and external investors in the area.

``It is your task to start investing in education, agriculture, commerce, health, and other public services because nobody else will do this for you,`` she said.
