Two suspected thugs were shot dead by law-enforcers on Tuesday during a crackdown on bandits and other criminals in Dar es Salaam, police reported yesterday.
Dar es Salaam Deputy Special Zone Police Commander, Liberatus Barlow, told journalists that the incident happened at Tabata Kibangu area in Ilala Municipality.
Barlow said that three suspected thugs were shot by police following a tip by good Samaritans that armed robbery was going to take place in the area.
He said that police arrived at the scene shortly after and waited attentively to take care of the surrounding.
The suspects suddenly sensed the presence of police in the area and realized that they were surrounded.
So they opened fire on the police who also responded, said the deputy zonal police commander.
During the cross fire, police shot dead two suspected thugs while one of them escaped. They all died as they were being rushed to a nearby hospital, said Barlow.
He named one suspected thug as Rahim Omary alias scorpion, resident of Tandika and identified the other by only one name of Jamal.
After searching the scene shortly after the cross fire, police found two plate numbers with number T742 ASB, an empty bank cheque with number 100437 from account number 41049852, six passport size photographs and a rifle with eight bullets.
They also found a revolver (gun) with six bullets, said the zonal deputy police chief.
The deceased are preserved at the Amana municipal hospital and police are still searching for the bandit who escaped.
