Three toddlers were found abandoned at different places in Dar es Salaam last week, police have said.
Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Jamal Rwambow told journalists on Friday that two of them were dead.
Rwambow said that one of the infants was abandoned at Kawe Mzimuni in Kinondoni District on April 2, this year.
He said police were informed by a woman identified by only one name of Joha, who said she saw the baby wrapped in a plastic bag and abandoned in a toilet.
Rwambow said police were holding Devoda Mponchi (22), who lives in the area in connection with the dumped toddler.
According to the RPC, Mponchi was arrested allegedly on the clue given by Joha, who reportedly told the law-enforcers that after she had seen the baby in the toilet, she checked with her sister in law, who was pregnant, and discovered that she neither had a baby nor pregnancy.
Rwambow said that when Mponchi was questioned by police she said that she didn`t prefer to have a baby girl.
The body of the deceased was taken to Mwananyamala Municipal Hospital.
The second baby was also abandoned in a toilet at Makape Msumi also in Kinondoni District. Rwambow told journalists that contrary to the first one, this one was alive and the mother was yet to be identified.
He said the toddler was taken to Muhimbili National Hospital for medical checkup.
In the third incident, a city cleaner whose name could not be immediately established reported to the police that he found a dead body of a toddler covered with a kanga at Mji Mpya dump area in Temeke.
Temeke Assistant Regional Police Commander Rukia Simbakalila said the suspect was not identified and the body of the deceased was taken to Temeke Municipal Hospital for preservation.
