Sitta orders expenditure report in bid to clear his name

By Judica Tarimo, Dodoma

Speaker of the National Assembly Samuel Sitta yesterday instructed the office of the Clerk to the National Assembly to prepare his official expenditure since he assumed office in the wake of allegations of abuse of office and financial embezzlement levelled against him.

``I have already directed the Parliamentary Office to prepare a comprehensive and printed report showing my official expenditure including allowances since I was sworn in as Speaker,`` said Sitta at the end of the question-and-answer session yesterday morning.

Sitta`s clarification has been triggered by accusations posted on the Internet and other sources, linking him to abuse of office and embezzlement of funds in allowances, salary and other emoluments.

Some sections of the local media were recently quoted as saying that the Speaker had set up an environment that guaranteed him huge allowances and payments out of official trips and other official duties.

It is understood that unknown individuals circulating these reports had gone to the extent of sending insulting text messages to Sitta`s children, belittling and tarnishing his reputation as Speaker of the National Assembly, one of the crucial state pillars.

In what could be seen as an attempt to clean up his name, the Speaker said in the National Assembly yesterday: \"I am ready to face these people who are seeking to spoil my reputation before the eyes of the public.

I have already instructed the Parliamentary Office to prepare my official expenditure including allowances and other official payments since I assumed office.
