Chamber of Minerals, goverment introduce miners` training drive

The government in collaboration with the Tanzania Chamber of Minerals and Energy (TCME) has introduced an initiative called Integrated Mining Technical Training (IMTT).
to produce skills required in the mining sector and for human resource needs in the sector.
The joint initiative between the government and the chamber, was announced in a statement issued over the weekend by the Public Relations and Communications Manager with Barrick Gold Tanzania Ltd, Teweli Teweli.
Teweli said the programme would cater for the gold mining companies, and later for the whole sector to cover coal mining, iron, soda ash, gemstones, gas and petroleum.
``Anglo Gold Ashanti and Barrick Gold Tanzania Ltd have volunteered to provide finances towards the preparatory stages of the project to meet the growing demand for skills in the mining sector. Thereafter, financing will be the responsibility of all stakeholders,`` the statement said.
Teweli said that IMTT would be regulated by the government through VETA and the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) and would acquire national and international accreditation.
``Barrick`s development and succession planning, aims at developing Tanzanians to take over from expatriates, so initiatives such as IMTT will enable us to keep on track,`` the statement read in part.
The report explained that, Barrick Gold Tanzania Ltd had in place several initiatives including improving the quality of graduate engineers from Mining and Minerals Processing Engineering department of the University of Dar es Salaam.
According to the statement, Barrick recently signed another MoU on partnership with Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS).
The MoU will provide for mutual interests in areas of research, development, education and training, transfer of technology, and dissemination of knowledge.
