The government plans to upgrade about 90 ordinary secondary schools to admit A Level students between 2008 and 2011, the House was told yesterday.
Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training Mwantumu Mahiza said in the House that the extension programme would take place in two phases.
Mahiza, who was answering a question by Bernadeta Mushashu (Special-Seats, CCM) said the first phase would be implemented in the coming fiscal year while the second phase would be implemented in the 2010/2011 financial year.
Mashashu had wanted to know the government`s plans to ensure that all students who qualify for A Level education were enrolled.
Mahiza said 45 Ordinary Level secondary schools would be expanded in each phase, each of which would accommodate 10,800 A Level students.
The minister said the government was facing a critical challenge of expanding secondary education, specifically A Level due to the increased number of students who pass Ordinary Level education.
She said the number of Ordinary Level secondary students who qualified for A Level education increased from 77, 238 in 2005 to 115,302 last year.
``Due to the increase, the government has taken various measures, including transforming 13 Ordinary level secondary schools to accommodate A Level students only,``she said.
She added that in the second programme, the government plans to transform the remaining boarding schools to accommodate A Level students only effective from next year.
``In the third-phase, each district will be required to construct two secondary schools one for girls and the other for boys to accommodate about 21,600 A Level students,`` she said.
``With all these measures, we expect that by 2010 there will be an increase of 86,800 posts for A Level students and our vision is to extend A Level education from 35,000 students to 100,000 by the year 2012,`` she said.
