Social development college certificates not recognised - govt

By Guardian Reporter, Dodoma

The Deputy Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, Lucy Nkya, yesterday said that the government does not have plans to recognise certificates issued by social development colleges in the country.

Nkya said the reason was because the colleges were established purposely for providing informal studies intended for participants to become economically independent through self employment.

She said the training focused on people`s desire to develop rural areas.

``It is true that the government does not recognise these certificates as it does for the Vocational and Educational Training Authority (VETA), so any participant who wants to join the labour market should sit for VETA examination,`` Nkya said.

Nkya said her ministry was working to improve education provided at Social Development Colleges.

She said some of the colleges had already been registered as centres for adult education which will provide secondary education for two years to people living within the vicinity of the institutions.

Nkya said Singida, Sengerema and Malampaka colleges have joined the edult education scheme in providing secondary education.

In her principal question, Teddy Kasella-Bantu (Bukene, CCM), had wanted to know when the government would recognise certificates issued by social development colleges.
