By Lydia Shekighenda, Dodoma

The government has said that it has not received official information about teachers living in grass-roofed houses.

Deputy Minister of State, Prime Minister`s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) Celina Kombani told the House here yesterday when responding
to a question by Benito Malangalila (Mufindi South, CCM).

Malangalila had wanted to know whether the government was aware of teachers living in grass-roofed houses and students studying under trees.

``My office has no official information about teachers living in grass-roofed houses despite the fact that there is shortage of teachers` houses in the country,``
Kombani said.

She said that a total of 10,968 houses were built across the country in a period of five years during the implementation of the Primary Education Development Programme (MMEM).

Kombani said the programme, was meant to provide better houses for primary school teachers, especially in rural areas where there were shortage of houses for rent.

She however said the government was aware of shortage of classrooms in many primary schools, but temporary measures were being undertaken to overcome the problem such as the use of double shift system.

Kombani further said that the government was implementing the second phase of the programme for primary school education 2007-2011 whereby 45,012 classrooms and
89744 houses for teachers would be constructed.

She however said in the coming fiscal year 21,936 houses for teachers and 10,753 classrooms would be built countrywide.
