The Dar es Salaam water and Sewerage Cooperation (DAWASCO) yesterday carried out a water disconnection exercise in the premises of outstanding debtors, who include senior public figures.

Those affected in yesterday`s operation are MP for Kyela Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, and Executive Director of the Tanzania Investment Centre, Emannuel ole Naiko, who apparently owes the water utility firm some 791,379.60/-.

According to Dawasco, Peniel Lyimo, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperatives has an outstanding bill of 678, 292.00/-, former minister Edgar Maokola-Majogo (673,573.00/-) and Abubakari Somo (2,283,722.95/-).

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday,DAWASCO Public Relations Manager Badra Masoud said the operation would go on until all the debts had been cleared.

She named other debtors as Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister`s Office, Vincent Mrisho, whom she said owes the company 613,752.00/-, Tanzania Christian Church (1,280,764.10/-) and Starford Masulube (1,907,818.15/-).

Others are Miraji Msuya (1,033,552.10/-), Dominic Pallangyo (982,003.40/-) and Roger Magwaza (1,956,885.15/-). Dawasco Boko Branch Manager Ramadhani Mtindasi said many public figures who lived in the area were major defaulters.

He said the operation would continue in other areas. DAWASCO said on Tuesday that it was losing 2.5bn/- monthly in unpaid water bills, mostly by well-to do customers.
