Ministry to conduct public education on menopause

By Lydia Shekighenda, Dodoma

The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will issue leaflets to educate the public, especially men, on the problems faced by women when they reach menopause.

This was said by the ministry`s Deputy Minister, Aisha Kigoda, yesterday when responding to a question by Anne Kilango Malecela (Same East, CCM) who had wanted to know what the government was doing to educate the public on the changes which women underwent when they reach menopause.

Malecela said that many women, when they reached the stage, changed completely and become cruel to their male partners.

She said a study had established that about 35 per cent of men were being beaten by their female partners, especially when the women reached this stage.

``Menopause is not a disease but a condition faced by women when they reach the age between 45 and 52 years,`` she said.

She said the changes were due to a decrease in the estrogens hormone resulting in the end of the menostrual cycle.
