Tanzanians have been advised to uphold a culture of preventive maintenance to save the country from losing billions of shillings on reconstructing worn out facilities and infrastructure.

The Principal of Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT), Prof John Kondoro, said that a lot of money is spent to establish industrial premises, bridges and roads, but neglect due to absence of preventive maintenance is costing the nation dearly.

Prof Kondoro was speaking at the opening ceremony of a regional conference on Management held in Dar es salaam yesterday.

He said that DIT has been running special courses on facility management aimed at inculcating a culture of preventive maintenance very successfully for years now.

A DIT graduate on facility management, Adventina Ludovick, said in an interview that more emphasis was needed to help Tanzanians acquire facility management skills, as the course is being taught through distance learning now.

She requested the government to formulate a new policy for facility management in the country to help reduce losses the country is incurring.

The themes of the conference were, `Education and training in facilities management`, `Facilities management in developing countries,` and `Enhancing organisations through facilities management`.

The Conference sponsored by Association of Commonwealth Universities, was jointly organized by DIT and Leeds Metropolitan University.
