An arrangement which will enable the setting up of a new fund aimed at building the capacity of investigative journalism was signed in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Under the arrangement, the Tanzania Media Fund (TMF), a three-year USD7.2m project financed by six international development partners, will provide grants to media houses, newspapers, radio stations and television stations as well as individual journalists to research and then publish/broadcast stories with an investigative or public interest theme.

The TMF which was initiated by Swiss Cooperation is co-financed by the UK`s Department for International Development (DFID), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Irish Aid, the Danish Embassy and the Embassy of the Netherlands.

At the signing ceremony of the joint cooperation and finance arrangement of the fund the framework within which the six development partners will work was also set out.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Ambassador of Switzerland, Adrian Schläpfer said: ``The media can play a critical role in a developing country like Tanzania which is undergoing significant political and economic reforms. It can hold the government to account, provide information to citizens and act as a forum for public debate.``

The arrangement was signed at Luther House in Dar es Salaam, which was the home of Tanzania`s first school of journalism.

The public launch of TMF is scheduled for later this year.
