Normalcy has returned at the University of Dar es Salaam after three days of riots that left a number of students and police officers injured.
The university\'s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rwekaza Mukandala, told The Guardian yesterday that classes had resumed and ``the situation is now calm.``
The government on Wednesday announced that all students involved in the strike would be expelled and would not be enrolled in any public university.
Until yesterday, according to Prof. Mukandala, a total of 264 students had been listed for expulsion.
``These include the 38 students who were arrested on the first day of the riots and who had already appeared in court. The exercise of verifying trouble makers is still going on. We think the number of culprits will increase,`` he said.
He added: ``There are more than 300 students who have failed to pay their fees. We have come to realize that they are among the ringleaders of the unrest at the campus. We are going to deregister them,`` said Prof. Mukandala.
Asked whether there were any plans to close the university due to the unrest, Professor Mukandala said: ``No way. We are not going to close because we have students who are willing to learn``.
He said the situation at the campus was calm, adding: ``Security remains tight. Intervention will occur should there be a necessity to do so.``
Prof. Mukandala refuted reports that two students died during the riot.
UDSM students went on strike early this week, demanding reinstatement of 25 colleagues who were suspended early this month allegedly for violating university regulations.
