Eight hundred and four out of 2927 pupils of Kilakala Primary School in Temeke municipality, Dar es Salaam Region, sit on the floor due to scarcity of desks, a visit to the school by The Guardian last week witnessed.

The headteacher of the school, Abdul Kutarasa, told `The Guardian` last week that his school had only 268 desks when the total requirement was 2095 desks.

``We are facing a very serious problem, despite a 14m/- donation by the parents and municipal authorities for the purpose.

We still need 29m/- to solve this problem, so I call upon individuals and financial institutions to come forward and help our children,`` said Kutarasa
This reporter witnessed how the pupils sat on the dusty floor as they struggled to write with the support of their knees.

``One day I paid a visit to the school and was shocked at the state of affairs, I saw only one desk in a class,`` said one parent.

Kutarasa said it was difficult for pupils to master good handwriting due to the problem.

The shortage of desks remains one of the major challenges facing primary schools in the country.
