By Austin Beyadi

The British government has said it will spend 8.5 billion pounds in support of education in developing countries in the coming seven years.

The remarks were made in Dar es Salaam yesterday by British High Commissioner to Tanzania Philip Parham at this year`s award-giving ceremony to winners in the BP essay and oral fluency competition for Tanzanian secondary schools.

He said in order to ensure that developing countries advanced in various fields, education needed to be addressed as a vital issue in development.

Purham said education was the key to prosperity, justice, peace, happiness and fulfillment, hence it had to be addressed with due emphasis by both the government, private sector and development partners.

He said education was essential in the development of developing countries and that through educational development Africa could stand on its own feet.

Education and Vocational Training minister Prof. Jumanne Maghembe said there was an urgent need for students to participate in essay competitions in order to develop their skills.
