2008-05-02 09:20:03
By Nasser Kigwangallah
Tanzania has been commended for its moral and material support to the Palestine struggle which is aimed at achieving total independence from the Israeli occupying forces.
Talking to journalists in his office yesterday, Palestinian ambassador Yousef Habbab said he appreciated very much the support his country received from President Jakaya Kikwete and the people of Tanzania.
He said the president had been active in highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people at local and international forums.
He said being African Union`s chairman, President Kikwete had moral responsibility to continue urging the United States and its Western allies to stop supporting Israel militarily and financially.
``Let us fight together for the cause of justice, equality and human rights until total victory to the Palestinian people is achieved,`` Habbab said.
The envoy urged journalists to play their role effectively in ensuring that the issue of Palestine was known to the entire population in the country.
He said not many people in the country knew much about the plight the people of Palestine were enduring due to the brutality of the Jewish state.
He challenged them to use their influence and the power of the pen to raise awareness of the people to the cause of Palestine so that it could be well documented and known to Tanzanians.
Habbab reminded that Tanzania and Palestine had had a long historical background rooted in the two countries\' independence struggle.
He said in fulfilling his responsibilities he would continue pressing for total freedom from Israeli forces.
He appealed to the international community to do all in its power to force Israel to lift its blockade imposed on Palestinian occupied territories and stopped its brutality on innocent children and people of Palestine.
