Girls` secondary schools took the lead in the Form Six National Examinations held in February, this year.

National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) Executive Secretary Dr Joyce Ndalichako told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that Kifungilo Girls` Secondary School headed the top ten.

Kibosho Girls` became number two in a row while Marian Girls stood at number nine.

For boys, Mzumbe secondary was ahead for being positioned in the third position, followed by Kilosa and Swilla secondary schools.

For seminaries, Sanu headed the list after holding the fifth position followed by Maua and Uru that snatched the seventh position while Nyegezi commandeered the tenth position.

According to Dr. Ndalichako, Popatlal, Maswa Girls, Fidel Castro, Esacs, Muslim College (Zanzibar) Zanzibar Commercial, Lake, Rungwe, Ifunda Technical and Shamiani performed poorly.

Dr. Ndalichako said the overall performance showed that there has been an improvement compared to last year.

She said passes for division I-III had increased by 5.83 per cent in comparison to 2007 exams results.

``Girls in that category have performed well compared to boys,`` she said, adding that the number of girls who registered for exams was lower than boys.

However, NECTA has withheld exams results for 170 candidates who failed to pay exam fees.

``Their results will be released soon after paying the fee,`` she said.

Dr. Ndalichako said the council had completely cancelled the results of about 54 candidates for being involved in malpractices in examination rooms.

She said results slips for the candidates would be available in their respective schools and exams centers.
``The exam results will be availed in the Internet this evening (yesterday),`` she said.
