By Michael Haonga

The government has attributed high increase in unemployment to poverty prevalence in the country, even though an economically active population has also been increasing.

Labour, Employment and Youth Development minister Prof Juma Kapuya made the remarks in Dar es Salaam yesterday when launching phase two of an initiative to support gender mainstreaming in employment creation policies and programmes.

Tanzania has qualified for the phase two initiative, being implemented jointly by the government, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Fund for Women (UNIFEM), after successful implementation of phase one.

Prof Kapuya said, for instance, that Tanzania`s economically active population had grown from 17.8 million in 2000/01 to 20.6 million in 2005/2006.
