East African Community Secretary-General Juma Mwapachu has challenged members of the Eastern and Southern African Inter-Regional Coordination Committee (IRCC) to jointly grab the opportunities that are available from the European Union (EC).
Mwapachu said this yesterday when opening IRCC`s 15th meeting held in Dar es Salaam. IRCC members include Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC), who are observers.
He said through the assistance from the European Development Fund (EDF) members were likely to register a number of developments in different sectors of their economies.
He insisted that member states should set a common objective of deepening regional integration, improve aid effectiveness, promote aid for trade and generally enable everyone to harmonize their position in the spirit of widening integration as enshrined in the African Union Abuja treaty.
However, he said it was important for the member states to identify specific needs of everyone, with particular focus on ensuring that the projects and programmes identified were implemented effectively.
