The controversial Meremeta Company has nothing whatsoever to do with state security issues, Kigoma North legislator Zitto Kabwe (Chadema) charged yesterday.
Kabwe told the National Assembly here that the august House deserved to be supplied with explanation over allegations of grand corruption involving the company.
Kabwe, who was a member of a presidential committee formed to pore over mining contracts, said the company could just as well come under scrutiny in the House.
"The National Assembly has its committees. If we can not discuss this issue in public then we can do it in camera through the relevant committee," suggested Kabwe.
A few days ago Karatu legislator Dr Wilbroad Slaa (Chadema) told Parliament that he was planning to table a private motion should the government fail to produce audited accounts of Meremeta and Tangold companies that he claimed were being suspiciously protected.
The opposition camp last week mentioned in the House that Meremeta was one of several firms involved in some of Bank of Tanzania (BoT) shady deals, demanding government explanation.
According to Dr Slaa, Meremeta opened an account in the United Kingdom, while Tangold had one in Mauritius, adding that while it had been revealed that Tangold had more than 10bn/- in its local bank account, nobody knew how much money it had in its overseas accounts.
Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said in the House last week while winding up debate on his office's budget estimates that he could not discuss the Meremeta issue in Parliament due to its being connected with state security.
