Journalists have been urged to write news stories that will help rural people solve problems and promote development in their areas.
The call was made by a veteran journalist, Elias Sabuni, at a rural reporting training seminar held in Kibaha town, Coast Region, recently.
Sabuni said a rural reporter was part of a contingent of field workers involved in promoting rural development as a communicator, mobilizer, inspirer, organizer, animator and articulator.
``A rural reporter must be acquainted with every facet of rural life or people they report on, including their customs, traditions, preoccupations, problems and aspirations; and must be versatile, alert and full of initiatives in order to enable him/her achieve the goals of bringing development in the areas,`` he said.
Sabuni said that a rural reporter was communicator who must favour training, development, sensitization and consultation in order to write news with accuracy to satisfy needs of the people in the areas.
He said rural news was currently covered by news agency reporters, government information officers, reporters from city-based media houses and rural local press reporters and channelled through radio and newspapers.
