The Dar es Salaam City Council and the Tanzania Ports Authority will soon start implementing their Water Front Development Project that includes land reclamation of 1.6 kilometres of the Indian Ocean from Kigamboni to the TPA headquarters.

Speaking during a stakeholders` workshop in Dar es Salaam yesterday, City Mayor Adam Kimbisa said the vision was to make the city much more attractive, with a view of turning Dar es Salaam into a world class investment tourist destination.

He said the project would also develop the city’s downtown core into a vibrant place for living, working and recreation.

Kimbisa said the scheme would bring many economic benefits for Dar es Salaam dwellers, as the city was facing challenges in providing economic and social services as well as office accommodation for the growing population.

``The city is yet to succeed in utilising the potential of its shores. We want Dar es Salaam to be the land of destination We are targeting to earn more from tourist activities,`` said the mayor.

TPA director general Ephraim Mgawe said by September this year, the Strategic Road Map and estimates on the actual cost of the undertaking would be ready.

Mgawe said the use of the site would include the building of international hotels, retail shops, restaurants, conference facilities, parks, cultural activities and theatre centres,
residential and office accommodation.

He said over the past ten years, TPA has been mulling over the development of a portion of land located within Dar es Salaam harbour into an international quality mixed use urban water front project.

``TPA has engaged a consultant from Canada to advice us on how the project can be realised, as a successful waterfront development requires a strong coordination process between stakeholders,`` said Mgawe.
