Plans are under way to put up a state-of-the-art market at Muhukuru area, on the border between Tanzania and Mozambique, which is expected to cater for trade and business opportunities anticipated when the new Muhukuru Bridge is complete.
Industry, Trade and Marketing minister Dr Mary Nagu revealed this on Monday when responding to a question by Jenista Mhagama (Peramiho, CCM) who had wanted to know if the ministry would facilitate the process to accomplish the mission.
``We will send experts to see the possibility of constructing a new market in the area…we shall work towards accomplishing that with our colleagues in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development,`` she said.
Earlier on, Dr Nagu had told Parliament that completion of the bridge would open up business opportunities which would definitely call for a need for a new market to serve traders from both countries.
She said the government had invested substantially in putting up the bridge for the purpose of opening up southern regions, including Ruvuma, in which where Peramiho constituency is found, to neighbouring Mozambique.
However, Dr Nagu said construction plans for international markets were executed by taking into account special criteria after assessing the needs and on receiving applications, something which Songea municipality had already done.
Such projects, the Minister explained, also required respective local councils to identify necessary resources, in terms of funding and expertise, from within and outside the respective localities.
She promised to work very closely with the Songea municipal council in making necessary preparations so that the market project was accomplished as planned for the benefit of the people.
