The Indian government has doubled to 18 the number of long-term scholarships for Tanzanian students who pursue graduate and postgraduate studies in the country.
Speaking to `The Guardian` during India`s 62nd Independence Day cerebrations in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania Kocheril Bhagirath said his country had been playing a major role in improving the country`s education sector through scholarships.
He said the government of India had been offering scholarships to nine Tanzanian students annually, but now it had doubled the number to 18.
He said short-term scholarships had also been increased from 110 to 120 students, adding that the number would be increased annually in order to meet the educational needs of most Tanzanians.
He said India had chosen education, agriculture, information technology and health as key priority areas of cooperation between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Bhagirath informed that an Indian naval ship would be making a goodwill visit to Tanzania next week.
He said the ship, INS ADITYA, which is based in Mumbai and is part of the country`s western naval command, was the first indigenously designed fast combat logistic ship built in India.
He said the ship is commanded by Captain Suresh and was named after the Sun god, the sustaining source of all life.
He said the ship provides logistic, stores, and refueling facilities to ships of the western command fleet, adding that it also carrys an integral Indian built Chetak helicopter on board.
