Students flee from `hostile` dormitory

By Amri Lugungulo, PST, Kisarawe

Several male students of Maneromango Secondary School, in Kisarawe District, Coast Region, have refused to stay at the school dormitory due to lack of beds, mattresses and food.

The students, totaling 169, have refused to stay in the dormitory despite the fact that some of them have no relatives in Maneromango village. They have opted to rent houses rather than live in the dormitory.

The headmaster, Damas Mchila, told PST recently that only 166 girls have agreed to stay in their dormitory, which is said to be in bad shape. Others have opted to stay with their relatives in the village.

The dormitory for the boys was built in the early 70s as a carpentry workshop when Maneromango was a middle school (boarding) but it has now been turned into a dormitory.

The headmaster said the school Board has requested the Tanzania Japan Food and Aid Counterpart Fund to help the school by donating funds for building at least two hostels.

He said they have already sent a write-up to the Fund and they are hoping for a positive response.

He remarked: ``The situation is very bad; the school has no dormitories, laboratory, electricity and food .

Most students claim that their parents cannot afford to pay for food. So how do you expect them to perform well in such a hostile environment?``
