By Kennedy Kissula, PST, Mtwara

The National Chairman of Civic United Front (CUF), Professor Ibrahim Lipumba, has claimed that Tanzania has the worst quality secondary education among the world’s 182 countries.

Prof. Lipumba made the claim at Mashujaa grounds in Mtwara last Wednesady. He was addressing a campaign rally.

The rally was one in a series, aimed at securing endorsement for his presidential election bid.

Prof. Lipumba did not go into the details of his claim, but told the audience that it was supported by statistics contained in a recent report of the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The CUF leader pointed out that secondary school education was a right and not a favour.

He blamed the government for neglecting the education sector, thereby depriving many young people of the right.

Prof. Lipumba attributed the poverty afflicting many Tanzanians to lack of education.

He elaborated: ’’If parents are poor, their children won’t be educated and a vicious circle is consequently created.’’

Prof. Lipumba claimed that the misuse of resources meant for promoting social services was behind the problem.

He said it was upsetting that whereas Mtwara Region was endowed with fertile land and a natural harbour, it was one of the country’s least economically developed and thus very poor.

The professor, who is a distinguished economist, said the Mtwara harbour can yield tremendous benefits through trade links with neighbouring Malawi and Zambia.

Professor Lipumba urged voters to elect CUF, pledging that once in power, the party would create several employment opportunities.
