Poor road network blamed for poverty

2005-09-25 07:36:50
By Kenneth Simbaya PST, Iringa

Poor road network in rural districts contributes to poverty amongst the people, the Iringa Regional Administration Secretary (RAS), Cecilia Shirima, has said.

She was speaking in Iringa last Thursday, when closing the 2nd Annual meeting between PORALG and RS and Council Engineers.

A workshop was held within the meeting period. Ruaha University College was the venue for the twin events.

Shirima said:’Poor roads in the country especially in rural districts have contributed to the current poverty situation in the country, and that rehabilitation of all feeder and district roads was important for poverty reduction.’

During the events, engineers had observed that lack of transport for supervision, maintenance and construction costs were relatively high.

They also observed that there was inadequate local surfacing materials (gravel) in some places, lack of construction equipment and financial mismanagement by the accounts department.

The government through PORALG should provide council engineers with reliable transport for proper supervision of road works, said Shirima.

The government was also asked to strengthen monitoring and supervision capacity of Regional Secretariat engineers.
