The University of Dar es Salaam has said it is keeping its doors open for potential investors interested in developing over 350 acres of its land which is located along Sam Nujoma Road in the city.
This is one of the universitys goal of development through mobilization of resources and investments.
According to the UDSM Public Relations Officer, Julius Saule, the university still holds a big chunk of land, which needs to be developed.
He said the door is open to any investors, local and foreign, who are interested in the Mlimani City Project.
So far the University of Dar es Salaam has contracted two companies which are working on the project, he said.
Saule revealed that Mlimani Holdings Limited is under the GH Group (PTY) Ltd of Botswana and La Casa Investments Limited of Tanzania.
He said the companies are interested in developing a students hostel and housing apartments.
About 195 of 350 acres available for development are located at the main campus along Sam-Nujoma Road ,another 68 acres are at the Silver Sands hotel in Kinondoni Municipality, Saule noted.
He mentioned other areas as the Faculty of Aquatic Science and Technology at Kunduchi Beach and a plot in the Mbagala Rangi Tatu area along Kilwa Road in Temeke Municipality.
Mlimani City Project is expected to cost about 89bn/-.
Its features would include a conference facility to accommodate about 1,000 delegates, a three star hotel, a shopping mall and office parking space as well as an arboretum.
He said construction of the project started last year and is expected to be completed by June 2006.
Previous reports had it that the oil company GAPCO had shown interest in investing in the project but withdrew at the eleventh hour due to instability in fuel prices in the world market.
GAPCO have postponed their investment under the project because of the instability of oil prices worldwide, the sources said.
But he noted this was not the end of the road as the university and the company was still talking with each other on the subject.
GAPCO is interested in constructing a modern service station and demonstration secondary school.
The university decided to put its otherwise idle land to the best available economic uses as part of its effort to generate income and secures greater financial security.
This would supplement the inadequate subvention it currently gets from cash strapped government.
