Zanzibar’s ex-EAC staff fault...

2005-09-25 07:46:14
By Issa Yusuf, Zanzibar

Former East African Community (EAC) workers from Zanzibar have refused to travel to Dar es Salaam to receive their terminal benefits, the Sunday Observer learnt yesterday.

They argued that there was no need for them to travel all the way to Dar es Salaam to collect their money.

’This is unnecessary inconvenience created by this government. We have banks in Zanzibar and even a Bank of Tanzania branch here, why can’t they use the banks?’ queried Said Salim Omar, a former ex-Telecoms technician.

He told this reporter that there were a number of his colleagues in Zanzibar who may fail to travel to Dar es Salaam for the money because most of them cannot afford transport costs after staying for a long time without being paid.

’Since most of us are now old, there was no reason for the government to put us in a difficult situation again by designating only a few banks in Dar es Salaam for the exercise,’ he said.

He added that he was sure some of the old people would not be able to travel all the way from their respective places to Dar es Salaam for the payment.

In a related development, some ex-EAC employees have complained that their names are missing in the list that thegovernment released recently.

Efforts to get comments from the Minister for Finance did not yield positive results.
