A total of 376 pupils, equivalent to 36% of the 1037 who passed last years national standard seven examination in Kisarawe district, Coast region, have not been selected to join secondary schools this year due to shortage of schools in the district.
The District Education Officer (DEO), Winifrida Mbuya told the Sunday Observer recently that only 661 pupils, of whom 329 are girls, have been selected.
Mbuya said 1653 pupils of whom 819 were girls were expected to sit for the examination last year but only 1631 did. Of these, 803 were girls, and out of the 1037 pupils who passed the examinations, 446 were girls.
Initially, she said 2499 pupils (1197 of them girls) were enrolled in standard one in 1997, but as time went by the number of pupils dropping out soared due to absenteeism, transfer and lack of awareness among the pupils parents.
As a result, Mbuya said, 22 pupils (16 of them girls) did not sit for the examination.
The district, which marks a centenary this year since it was established by the colonial rule in the 1900s has only five public secondary schools including Chanzige, Maneromango, Mzenga, Msanga and Chole which also lack hostels for the students.
