Preps on for exemplary manufacturers contest

The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) yesterday said the deadline for submitting application forms for the Manufacturer of the Year Award competition would be April 6.

The CTI Executive Director, Christine Kilindu, said the competition, to take place on May 6, would be open to all companies, which have paid the 2005 CTI membership fees.

Kilindu said in Tanzania there are over 1,000 companies in all, of which 250 are members of CTI.

She said the competition which was officiated for first time last year by former president Benjamin Mkapa, will this year involve large scale industries.

Large-scale industries are those with an annual turn-over of 10bn/- and above and whose capital investment in machinery is over 1bn/-and with more than 100 employees.

’’The competition will also comprise small and medium scale industries,” CTI Executive Director said.

Medium scale industries are those with annual turn-over of 650m/- to 9.9 billion and with capital investment in machinery of 200 m/- to less than 1bn/- and whose number of employees is 55 to 99, according to Kilindu.

Small scale industries are companies whose annual
turn-over is of 49m/- to 649m/- with the capital investment in machinery of 5m/- to 199m/- and with 5 to 49 employees.’’

The CTI Executive Director said that participating companies will be grouped in five industrial classifications agro-processing industries such as food, beverage and tobacco, textile, wearing apparel and leather, agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing.

’’The second category includes the chemical and plastics industries whereby chemical, petroleum, coal, rubber and plastic products dealers will compete,” she said.

She said the third category would comprise wood and printing industries such as wood processing products and furniture, paper products, printing and publishing companies.

Kilindu said that other participants in the competition are under the category of metal and non-metal companies fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment, basic metal industries and non-mineral products.

She added: ’’The fifth category is service industries finance, insurance, real estate and business services, transport, storage and communication.

The community, social and personal services, hotels and restaurants, electricity, gas and water and the holding companies are also under this category.’’

She said the criteria to win the competition include the economic performance which refers to annual sales turnover, increase in production compared to the previous year, increase in contribution to the government revenue over the year.

’’The technical performance where firms will be rated for any technological improvement and use of modern technology in the production processes, cleaner production techniques, environmental management, energy efficiency, quality assurance and use of local raw materials,’’ she said.

She said the export performance where firms will be rated according to the volume and value of their exports, adding that the corporate social responsibility where firms will be rated on the basis of their contribution to various employees’ social services including staff welfare, occupational health and safety and training.

She revealed that awards will be presented to the winners at the annual Business Dinner in Dar es Salaam on May 6, this year, to be preceded by the 14th Annual Meeting.
