The price of cereals in Dar es Salaam has continued to decline following the over-flow of fresh supplies from the regions, the Sunday Observer has established.
A survey conducted by this correspondent during the week in Buguruni, Kisutu, Kariakoo, Tandika,Tandale and Temeke Stereo markets has shown that rice was now selling at 800/- a kilo as compared to 1,200/- two weeks back.
The survey also revealed that this dramatic decrease of food prices has prompted many city residents to afford decent meals.
Ahmad Kilile, a food vendor at Tandale market said he was now selling rice from Mbeya at 990/- a kilo while he used to sell the same commodity at 1,250/- a kilo.
There was also a decrease in the price of beans to 600/- a kilo from the previous one of between 1,000/- and 1,200/- a kilo, while peas have dropped in price to between 1,100/- and 1,200/- instead of 1,800/- and 2,200/- some two weeks ago.
Musa John, a food vendor at Makumbusho market, said the prices of most food items have gone down due to the fact that the supplies are steady because most farmers were now harvesting.
An officer with Kariakoo market who sought anonymity said they expect food prices to continue declining significantly next month because of good harvests in upcountry regions.
But many consumers who were interviewed complained that most foodstuffs were still expensive.
