By Correspondent Dominic Nkolimwa

The government has asked graduates from different universities in and outside the country who took loans to meet costs of their higher education to start repaying them with effect from this month.

A statement from the Higher Education Board which was released recently has requested the students who benefited from the grants from 1994 to refund the money as soon as possible.

The document stated that millions of shillings were in the hands of the beneficiaries, who have the ability to repay their loans, to enable the board avail the facility to others.

A senior official of the Ministry of High Education, Science and Technology told this reporter that his office was distributing letters to all institutions requesting the authorities to send the names of all graduates in their employment.

’’It is obvious that most graduates have been employed in the formal and informal sectors who were in a better position financially to start repaying their loans due to them, ’’ he said.

He asked employees to be truthful and not to cheat; and to co-operate fully with the board on the issue, pointing out that the loans were in essence public funds.

’’We are in the final stages of forming a special team which will be tasked to recover outstanding loans,’’ he said .
