Partnership between Media, Police stressed

Iringa Regional Police Commander Nyombi, has urged members of the Press to co-operate with the police force in fighting crime as a means of promoting peace and tranquility in the country.

He also urged journalists to adhere to ethics and principles of the their profession by writing well-balanced and accurate news stories for the benefit of the public.

Nyombi made the appeal here yesterday when officially opening of a consultative meeting of regional press clubs project implementation held at the VETA in Iringa Municipality.

During the workshop, participants reviewed the regional press clubs project implementation for the past three years that ended in November 2005.

The RPC said the media acts as a mediator between government departments and society by delivering information to the general public.

He said by so doing the crime rate would be reduced and hence peace and tranquility will prevail in the country.

Meanwhile, the President of Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC), Mwakilili Ulimboka ,said the major objective of the workshop was to build the capacity of journalists working in the regions through the press clubs.

He said the project also focused on training press clubs members in wide variety of subjects, which aimed at improving the professional skills.

The professional skills offered to journalists includes basic news writing, interviewing techniques, feature writing, media ethics, photography, and investigating journalism.

Others are issues based on environment, business, court, parliamentary and HIV/AIDS,’’ he said
The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) supported the regional press clubs project.
