Dr Omar Ali Juma remembered fondly

By Correspondent Michael Haonga

The third-phase government’s Vice-President, the late Dr Omar Ali Juma, who died five years ago, has been described as an exemplary leader of high integrity, and a frontliner in the anti-poverty drive.

That view run through the thread of comments from people who participated in a discussion on the deceased, organized by family members in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The discussion dwelt on the political and social life of the late Dr. Omar.

Retired Prime Minister, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, said Tanzanians owe much to the late Dr Omar for his dedication to poverty alleviation, environmental protection and patriotism.

A veteran journalist, Makwaia wa Kuhenga, said much as we remember the virtues with which Dr Omar demonstrated his service to his country, it was high time a culture evolved under which showering praise to distinguished leaders and Tanzanians who excelled in their service to the country was effected while they were alive too, rather than after their death.
