By George Sembony, PST Tanga

The Sustainable Tanga Programme (STP) has so far constructed over 5000 metres of storm-water drainage canals in the city in an attempt to eliminate the problem of flooding during rainy seasons.

The STP Co-ordinator, Venance Ngeleuya, said in Tanga that construction of the storm-water drainage canals, which is supported by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) involving city residents, is an implementation of the programme’s long-term goal of improvement of the sustainable environment for the city residents.

The short-term goal of the STP aims at enabling the city council to improve the environment in co-operation with various stakeholders by last year.

Ngeleuya said that STP policy is to encourage participation of stakeholders in project planning and implementation, revealing that beneficiaries have contributed about 8m/= out of the 117.7m/= total cost of construction of a total of 5,587 metres of canals.

STP-DANIDA contributed 101.2m/= out of the total cost of construction while the council’s contribution was 8.5m/=.

The canals whose construction is complete are in Kwanjeka Nyota (1,200 metres), Duga (470 metres), Makorora (855 metres), Mabawa (2,280 metres) and Mwanzange (555 metres). Other areas where the canals were constructed are Kisosora (227 metres), Ngamiani and Kiomoni.

The STP has also implemented other projects under its policy of involving beneficiaries. The projects include construction of shallow wells at Mwarongo village where villagers contributed 800,000/= of the total cost of 3.5m/=.

The Programme, according to Ngeleuya, has also constructed 480 community low-cost latrines in a bid to improve the city’s environmental sanitation.

Recipients contribute between 15,000/= and 20,000/= for one latrine, he said, reporting that the latrines have been constructed at Kiomoni, Kwanjeka Nyota, Kichangani Mafuriko, Magaoni and Mwarongo.

Implementation of the STP projects is being done under Six Working Groups that were formed to ease execution of the Program plans.
