Kilolo District Commissioner Athuman Mfutakamba has said his first priority after his recent appointment to the post is to eliminate domestic labour amongst girls, and enrol them in schools.
Mfutakamba made the remarks in an interview with the Sunday Observer in his office during the week.
He said Kilolo District is notorious and one of the areas from where girls are trafficked to urban cities and towns to be recruited as domestic workers.
After noticing that some girls who were selected to join form one in secondary schools in the district did not do so but opted to go to Dar es Salaam to be employeed as domestic laboures for cheap pay instead, I immediately ordered them to be sent back, he said.
He said so far they have rescued 16 students 13 girls and three boys after forcing their employers to send them back to their parents and now they have been admitted to their respective schools.
The DC mentioned the schools where the students are now studying as Idegenda Secondary School, Lyamko Secondary School, Irole Secondary School and Kitovo Secondary School in Lundamatwe, Boma la Ngombe and Lugalo wards.
Mfutakamba said he was implementing the directives given to them by President Jakaya Kikwete at Ngurundoto recently in which they were instructed to enhance development for poor people in rural areas.
He said the district intends to construct one secondary school in every ward so that a good number of students can be admitted.
Presently, he explained, there are a total of 19 secondary schools, 12 of which are government-owned and seven are privately-run.
